Witt's End

by Jack R. Taylor

“At their wit’s end…they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he BRINGETH THEM OUT.”

(Psalm 107:27,28)

Wit’s end! That was my permanent address for a number of years! I wasn’t alone, but that didn’t help much. My neighbors were intolerable. Next door was Jealousy; across the street, Mr. Competition; and down the way, the Despair family. Old Man Politics haunted me by promising me much and delivering nothing but worry. I suppose I made an honest effort to move out of the neighborhood. But each effort ended in frustration. So it seemed that the discreet thing to do was to settle down in a rather quiet but well-rationalized despair and fake it as best I could.

There was one enormous problem. I was paid to tell people at wit’s end how to get out. I was a preacher. I was supposed to have all the answers. I didn’t even have the right questions! This makes the preacher’s job something which should be marked with the warning, “CAUTION: THIS MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR SANITY.”

I learned something about the neighborhood of Wit’s End. If you live in the last house there is no place to go but up.

Are you standing at “Wit’s End Corner,”
Christian, with troubled brow?

Are you thinking of what is before you,

And all you are bearing now?

Does all the world seem against you,

And you in the battle alone?”

REMEMBER…At “WIT’S END CORNER”

Is just when; God’s power is shown!

The story you are about to hear is true. The names and places have been unchanged to expose the guilty. Do not be surprised if at intervals you stop and say, “Hey, he’s telling MY story.” I am convinced that it is the story of most lives somewhere within the context of the Christian walk. If I could have chosen a longer title for this chapter, it would have been, “HOW I MOVED FROM WIT’S END LANE TO PRAISE THE LORD BOULEVARD!” This is my story. Forgive the inevitable personal references and the detail. Be assured that they are there with a design in mind. Happy reading!

I received Christ into my life when I was ten years old. After the typical instruction afforded by my church in the Christian life, I embarked upon the sea of Christian adventure. (The instruction was, “Please sit down!”) I do not remember anybody ever telling me what had happened to me when I was saved. There I was, all dressed up in a new experience and nowhere to go.
